Whare Manu - Kite House

Our objectives were to create a transparent space to minimise the visual impact on the built and natural environment. An unobtrusive building that did not disturb but rather evoked a natural inherited emotion.

The acute composition of the site led us to explore triangular forms that complemented the raw natural materials of an abrasive ever changing coast line. The shape of a traditional Maori kite was the main source of our inspiration. High against the blue sky, a kite is transparent to grounded observers against the blue canvas - We wanted to recreate the same illusion.

An auditorium of light, enjoyment and nature. An affirmation of a vibrant interactive community
